Paul Guinan in the Portland Tribune

Paul and his robot Boilerplate are the subject of a two-page feature article on the cover of the life section in the Portland Tribune. The ‘bot’s head is even on the masthead of the paper’s front page! Pick up a copy this weekend and read a well written overview of Paul’s career, and how he created Boilerplate.

Boilerplate spotted in the Tribune

Thursday’s Portland Tribune, reporting on Richard Finn’s Portland Comic Book Show, printed an image of Paul Guinan’s Boilerplate from the Eisner nominated graphic novel “Heartbreakers Meet Boilerplate.”

Paul will be attending the show today (Sunday), along with fellow studio member Ron Randall.

Boilerplate Bag of Swag

As mentioned earlier in this blog, Paul Guinan’s Victorian robot Boilerplate is the mascot for the indie band STARS. Paul went to their Portland concert last week and came home with a bag of swag. Boilerplate adorns not just the the album’s cover, but the the North American tour’s T-shirts, tote bags, and poster. They even made a pendant of the ol’ ‘bot!

Band adopts Boilerplate as mascot for North American tour.

Paul Guinan’s Victorian robot, Boilerplate, has been adopted as the “mascot” for the latest album by Stars, an indie pop band from Toronto.  The mechanical man appears on the Sad Robots CD cover, tour poster, and assorted merchandise such as T-shirts, tote bags, and a necklace.

A typical news item about the album, along with a small collage of Boilerplate images, can be found HERE.

Stars is currently on a North American tour.  They’re playing in Portland, Oregon this Wednesday, October 8, at the Wonder Ballroom.  Since Guinan resides in Portland, he plans to attend the show, possibly with Boilerplate in tow…

Paul Guinan also did a piece for McMenamins

Along with Jonathan Case, Paul Guinan did a painting for McMenamins. It’s at the Kennedy School’s Boiler Room Bar–yes, Paul’s robot Boilerplate is involved…

Paul Guinan’s First Thursday gallery exhibition

Sure, you’ve always suspected Paul Guinan of having the widest-ranging talent of anyone you know… but now, here’s proof!

During the First Thursday gallery gala for June, Paul will display a one-man exhibition of works in a variety of media–from paintings on canvas, to traditional photography, to ink drawings. Also on display will be the digital art that Paul calls “Paintography,” and even some homemade toys.

This is a truly unique event, with rarely viewed original art and previously unseen work.  Not quite a retrospective, but certainly the most comprehensive show Paul has ever mounted.  It’s not to be missed! At the opening will be Anina Bennett, who will present the public debut of Paul’s nude portrait of her.  How’s that for a little interest-piquing teaser?!

Fazoli’s Factoid Fake

A Boilerplate fan from back east noticed Paul Guinan’s Mechanical Marvel mentioned as a factoid on a kids menu at the Italian restaurant chain Fazoli’s.
The factoid read “A robot called ‘Boilerplate’ was one of the first robots ever created. That was in 1893!”Where will the old ‘bot be next? A scan of the menu is on Paul’s Boilerplate site.
