The comics MUSEUM show REDUX!

Did you miss out on seeing Comics at the Crossroads: Art of the Graphic Novel, last year at the Maryhill Museum? It showcased the work of 40 Pacific Northwest comic artists, including many from Periscope Studio. Now you have a second chance! The Boise Art Museum is presenting the show again at their venue, and again Periscopians are well represented. The show will run August 20 – November 27, 2011. A reception will be held on August 19 at 5:30pm. Get to the Boise Art Museum–BAM!

    Stumptown Art Exhibit

    Artists Reception: Thursday, April 1, 2010 6:pm – 9:pm
Gallery runs through Monday, May 31, 2010.

Portland Center for the Performing Arts, the Stumptown Comics Foundation, and Sequential Art Gallery are excited to present the 6th annual Stumptown Comics Art Show, coinciding with Portland’s third annual Portland Comic Book Month. The exhibit this year showcases an unprecedented 40+ artists, ranging from local to international professionals and emerging talent, with 80 pieces of comic book and illustrated art.

Opening reception will be hosted at PCPA on First Thursday, April 1, from 6-9pm. Mayor Sam Adams will be in attendance to read the official proclamation of April as Portland’s Comic Book Month, and many of the participating artists will also be on hand throughout the evening. Catering and drinks for the event will be provided by PCPA’s ArtBar and MacTarnahan’s Brewing.

Free guided tours featuring the exhibit as well as other local galleries will be provided to attendees of the Stumptown Comics Fest (April 24-25; www.stumptowncomics.com). The Stumptown Comics Art Show will be available for viewing throughout April and May in the Antoinette Hatfield Hall of the Portland Center for the Performing Arts at 1111 SW Broadway (10am-5pm, Monday-Saturday; www.pcpa.org). Periscope’s Dylan Meconis, Erika Moen, and Susan Tardif will be part of the exhibit. For a complete list of artists please visit www.sequentialartgallery.com.

    First Thursday: robot vs ponies

Another First Thursday, another gallery opening that features work from our studio members. And this month there’s two shows!

Erika Moen, Terri Nelson, Cat Farris, and a string of other artists contribute their modified My Little Ponies to the OMG PWN!ES group exhibition at The Sequential Art Gallery. There will be tentacles until January. The opening reception begins at 6pm.

Paul Guinan moved his 25 piece Boilerplate robot art show from the ArtBar over to the Pearl Room at Powell’s Books on Burnside. A second, and last chance, to catch this show, it runs until the first weekend of January. The Thursday reception begins at 6:30pm. Paul will sketch in copies of the robot’s book.

As part of their two woman art show, LADY PARTS, Dylan Meconis & Erika Moen will be having a book signing party at the Sequential Art Gallery this weekend. Dylans’ art. Erika’s art.

Dylan will be signing & selling copies of her vampire comic, “Bite Me!”, and Erika will be selling & signing copies of “DAR: A Super Girly Secret Comic Diary – Vol. 1″ book, which collects the webcomic of the same name. Both will have additional merchandise & give-aways for book buyers. (Dylan will be giving away buttons & Erika mentioned something we can’t repeat on this site. Anyone who’s met her will not be surprised by this news.)

The event will be this Saturday (April 25th), from 5pm to 8pm, with refreshments served. If you missed seeing either of them at this year’s Stumptown Comics Fest, then this will be your best opportunity to come by and say Hi.

We hope that you’ll join us for this event. See you Saturday!

First Thursday comics domination (and some damnation)!

As part of Portland’s monthly First Thursday festivities, Matthew Clark has a show opening tonight at Vorpal Space entitled “Sketches from Hell.” Last month Jim Valentino had a show at Sequential Art Gallery and he posted a virtual tour of it. The First Thursday before that, Paul Guinan had a one-man exhibit called “Multimedia Man.” Periscopians and their pals continue to dominate the local gallery scene.  Bow to us!

    The Date: July 5th
    The Time: 6pm to 10pm
    The Place:

    Sequential Art Gallery & Studio
    328 NW Broadway #113
    Portland OR 97209

Matthew will be showing art from after his heart attack, so that means there’ll be pages from his work on Superman/Batman, The Outsiders and some DC covers. Also on display is an enormous collaboration piece with Aimee Dieterle:

    See you there!

    Keep that eye interested.

The Portland Tribune picked up on our show at Floating World and has some art. And that show, by the way is at 20 N.W. Fifth Ave. #101, Call 503-241-0227 for more info. (Special thanks to VJ for reminding us that information like the address of an event can come in handy.)

This is the sort of thing that Jesse blogs about better than I do, but I followed a Journalista link to Austin Kleon’s post about “one point” perspective and thought it needed some sort of reply. (And I posted one there as well as here.) I won’t quote Austin’s post because most of it is images, but just to clarify I think the term he meant to use was “linear perspective” not “one-point perspective.” One-point perspective is a type of linear perspective. It’s used when there is only one vanishing point needed to construct an object or a space in a picture.

Obviously when says “death to one point perspective” it’s just fun hyperbole, but I think in rejecting linear perspective, he’s throwing out the baby with the bathwater. It’s an extremely useful system for describing basic physical facts in a picture, like the distance between objects or their relative size. And offering readers the illusion of varying degrees of depth throughout the pages of a comic does a lot to keep the eye interested.

What else? Jeff Parker’s Walk-In is becoming a sleeper favorite with the people who’ve found it. Here’s a review of the first five issues.

Also Parker-centric: this reviewer declares Marvel Adventures:The Avengers #12 “absolute genius.”

Comic-Con has announced that they’re “currently talking to the major Hollywood studios and the following films are under consideration for presentations at this year’s event.”

Alien vs. Predator 2: No Peace On Earth, American Gangster, Babylon A.D., Balls of Fury, Beowulf, The Bourne Ultimatum, Coraline, Fred Claus, Get Smart, The Golden Compass, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, I Am Legend, The Incredible Hulk, Indiana Jones 4, The Invasion, Iron Man, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Resident Evil: Extinction, Speed Racer, The Strangers, Stardust, Star Trek, Sunshine, Sweeney Todd, 30 Days of Night, Trick ‘r Treat, Wanted, Where the Wild Things Are, White Out

I think that last one is actually this:

This means there might be a big panel promoting the movie at SDCC, which means I’ll have to actually stand up, leave my chair in artists alley and cross the floor in the middle of Comicon. I’m… I’m not sure if I’m ready for that.
