Another First Thursday, another gallery opening that features work from our studio members. And this month there’s two shows!
Erika Moen, Terri Nelson, Cat Farris, and a string of other artists contribute their modified My Little Ponies to the OMG PWN!ES group exhibition at The Sequential Art Gallery. There will be tentacles until January. The opening reception begins at 6pm.
Paul Guinan moved his 25 piece Boilerplate robot art show from the ArtBar over to the Pearl Room at Powell’s Books on Burnside. A second, and last chance, to catch this show, it runs until the first weekend of January. The Thursday reception begins at 6:30pm. Paul will sketch in copies of the robot’s book.

Watercolor art by Dylan Meconis from Lady Parts, an exhibit at the Sequential Art Gallery
As part of their two woman art show, LADY PARTS, Dylan Meconis & Erika Moen will be having a book signing party at the Sequential Art Gallery this weekend. Dylans’ art. Erika’s art.
Dylan will be signing & selling copies of her vampire comic, “Bite Me!”, and Erika will be selling & signing copies of “DAR: A Super Girly Secret Comic Diary – Vol. 1″ book, which collects the webcomic of the same name. Both will have additional merchandise & give-aways for book buyers. (Dylan will be giving away buttons & Erika mentioned something we can’t repeat on this site. Anyone who’s met her will not be surprised by this news.)
The event will be this Saturday (April 25th), from 5pm to 8pm, with refreshments served. If you missed seeing either of them at this year’s Stumptown Comics Fest, then this will be your best opportunity to come by and say Hi.
We hope that you’ll join us for this event. See you Saturday!

As part of Portland’s monthly First Thursday festivities, Matthew Clark has a show opening tonight at Vorpal Space entitled “Sketches from Hell.” Last month Jim Valentino had a show at Sequential Art Gallery and he posted a virtual tour of it. The First Thursday before that, Paul Guinan had a one-man exhibit called “Multimedia Man.” Periscopians and their pals continue to dominate the local gallery scene. Bow to us!

The Portland Tribune picked up on our show at Floating World and has some art. And that show, by the way is at 20 N.W. Fifth Ave. #101, Call 503-241-0227 for more info. (Special thanks to VJ for reminding us that information like the address of an event can come in handy.)
This is the sort of thing that Jesse blogs about better than I do, but I followed a Journalista link to Austin Kleon’s post about “one point” perspective and thought it needed some sort of reply. (And I posted one there as well as here.) I won’t quote Austin’s post because most of it is images, but just to clarify I think the term he meant to use was “linear perspective” not “one-point perspective.” One-point perspective is a type of linear perspective. It’s used when there is only one vanishing point needed to construct an object or a space in a picture.
Obviously when says “death to one point perspective” it’s just fun hyperbole, but I think in rejecting linear perspective, he’s throwing out the baby with the bathwater. It’s an extremely useful system for describing basic physical facts in a picture, like the distance between objects or their relative size. And offering readers the illusion of varying degrees of depth throughout the pages of a comic does a lot to keep the eye interested.
What else? Jeff Parker’s Walk-In is becoming a sleeper favorite with the people who’ve found it. Here’s a review of the first five issues.
Also Parker-centric: this reviewer declares Marvel Adventures:The Avengers #12 “absolute genius.”
Comic-Con has announced that they’re “currently talking to the major Hollywood studios and the following films are under consideration for presentations at this year’s event.”
Alien vs. Predator 2: No Peace On Earth, American Gangster, Babylon A.D., Balls of Fury, Beowulf, The Bourne Ultimatum, Coraline, Fred Claus, Get Smart, The Golden Compass, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, I Am Legend, The Incredible Hulk, Indiana Jones 4, The Invasion, Iron Man, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Resident Evil: Extinction, Speed Racer, The Strangers, Stardust, Star Trek, Sunshine, Sweeney Todd, 30 Days of Night, Trick ‘r Treat, Wanted, Where the Wild Things Are, White Out
I think that last one is actually this:
This means there might be a big panel promoting the movie at SDCC, which means I’ll have to actually stand up, leave my chair in artists alley and cross the floor in the middle of Comicon. I’m… I’m not sure if I’m ready for that.

Lightly edited from Floating World’s myspace blog:
Portland’s best kept secret: we are a comics town. The list of local comics creators and publishers gets larger every year. I think it should be a point of pride that Portland is the West Coast comics capital of the nation.
For example, PERISCOPE (formerly MERCURY STUDIO) located in downtown Portland is the largest in the comic book industry. Home to over 20 artists and writers (including the artists of Superman, Batman,Wonder Woman, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man), this studio represents the best professionals working in the industry as well as new emerging artists.
First Thursday, June 7th from 6–10pm, Floating World Comics is proud to present a PERISCOPE STUDIO art show featuring as much of their all-star roster we could fit in the store! The following artists will be on hand displaying original comic art and comics:
STEVE LIEBER (Whiteout, Gotham Central, Civil War Frontline – Eisner Award Winner) PAUL GUINAN (Heartbreakers, Boilerplate – alternate history steampunk, featured in US News & Report and NY Times) KARL KESEL (Fantastic Four, Spider-Man) DAVID HAHN (Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, Bite Club, Private Beach) COLLEEN COOVER (Banana Sunday, Small Favors – best girly porno comic ever) DYLAN MECONIS (Wire Mothers: Harry Harlow and the Science of Love – history of psychology, featured in Publishers Weekly) JESSE HAMM (Good As Lily, a new Minx title – DC’s new imprint aimed at young teens and female readers) AARON MCCONNELL (The Young Pups) RON CHAN (A Dummy’s Guide To Danger)
Actually, Dylan will be on an airplane, and I’ll still be in Ohio, but the rest is right on target. But what’s all this about a new name? Stay tuned for the press release!

Like we said- he’s doing a lot better.
First Thursday • JUNE 1, 2006 Sequential Art is proud to present Matthew Clark’s HEROES?, a selection of his original artwork from the monthly comic series, OUTSIDERS, published by DC Comics. OUTSIDERS chronicles the exploits of costumed superhuman adventurers who break the ‘rules’ of the superhero establishment, thus blurring the line between the ‘good guys’ and the ‘bad guys’.
“Heroes?” marks Matthew’s third show in the Everett Station Lofts (which he also calls home), the first at Pause Gallery (Aug ’04), and then at Milk Studios (June ’05). His work was also part of group show at ArtBar (located in the PCPA) in Mar-Apr ’06, featuring artists from Mercury Studio, a collective of industry professionals living in Portland; Matthew is a founding member.
For First Thursday, Matthew will be in attendance to discuss his work and love of the comic book medium. Additionally, he will be joined by several members of the Outsiders in-person: Arsenal, Grace, Indigo, Jade, Nightwing and Shift (as performed by The Kids Your Mother Warned You About Players). They will be searching the Everett Station block for two of their more notable villains, and promoting the “Heroes?” installation.
Yes, you read that correctly. There will be live actors dressed up as The Outsiders running around the art gallery participating in a big scavenger hunt. If you are in Portland, you must go to see this.
The Sequential Art Gallery & Studio is in Portland at 328 NW Broadway #113. (503) 916.9293
