Nothing like signing your name to someone else’s work

Random internet weasel puts up a whole bunch of scans of Jeff Parker’s art in his own portfolio.

Jeff Parker vs. Tom Fowler

“Hi, folks. Jeff Parker here. Comic Book Resources is kindly testing out this new feature wherein I directly engage a potentially hostile artist in the wild and attempt to coax him or her into sharing with our fellow process junkies valuable secrets of hammering out a readable comic book.

For our first time out, I’m talking with cartoonist Tom Fowler, whose work can be seen often in some small upstart magazine called “MAD” or some such. Tom and I recently created a new series being published by Wildstorm called “Mysterius The Unfathomable,” so we’re going to focus on how one starts with nothing and gets to a fully realized cast and world. ”

Mysterius the Unfathomable interview

Newsarama’s Zack Smith interviews Jeff Parker about Mysterius the Unfathomable, Parker’s new project at Wildstorm.

Periscope was on Morning Edition

NPR’s Neda Ulaby spoke to a bunch of us at Periscope Studio about how we listen to music. Alas, they credit me as the writer of Whiteout instead of the illustrator. Sorry Greg! Anyhow, I woke up to this story and slapped at the clock radio on instinct, then realized I’d cut myself off in mid-sentence.

Also, Dylan Meconis has published the latest round of her notes for Family Man. Is there a webcomic out there, anywhere, that draws on a wider range of influences? No.

I just wanted an article title that looks like a license plate. There’s a Jeff Parker interview at CCC2

Gamekeeper News/Process Artwork

Here are some pics to show how we put together art for the book Guy Ritchie’s Gamekeeper, Series Two! Given the recent news about Virgin Comics, the future of the series is uncertain. So this may be a sneak preview, or it may be rare, unpublished art! Script by Jeff Parker, layout by Ron Randall, pencils and inks by Ron Chan, and colors by S. Sundarakannan.

Jeff Parker’s Heroes Con report.

A great cause.

Jeff Parker writes:
This coming weekend is the HEROES CONVENTION in Charlotte, NC! With a line up such has never been seen outside a mega-show like Comicon International. Darwyn Cooke is a special guest, so I’m hoping they made shirt with his art on it. I’m going to be there Saturday and Sunday, mostly at whatever table I’m put, but also…

At the HERO INITIATIVE booth, where we have a big gang-signing for the What If? featuring Mike Wieringo’s final work. On Saturday 3:00-4:00 will be all of these contributors: Richard Case, Todd Dezago, Cully Hamner, Stuart Immonen, Barry Kitson, Nathan Massengill, Jeff Parker, Val Staples, Mark Waid, and Matt Wieringo. On Sunday, that line up minus Stuart will be there from 3:30 to 4:30. We look forward to seeing you at the booth, and the sales of the book go to a great cause.

As you see, Mike’s brother Matt will be there, which leads into the next big announcement…

Matt Wieringo has created a scholarship in his brother’s name! The RINGO will be connected to the Savannah College of Art and Design, helping some prospective cartoonist cover costs in the Sequential Art program there. Read the full press release here at Chapel Hill Comics’ site.

It’s going to be a big weekend, I look forward to meeting you there.

Coover on NEWSARAMA

There’s a big ol’ interview with Colleen up in the Comics section at Newsarama, in which she talks mostly about her work at Marvel with her husband Paul Tobin and Periscope studio-mate Jeff Parker:

Of course working with Paul is as natural to me as breathing air. He was my first writer and he’s either written or helped me write pretty much every comic I’ve done up until the beginning of my time working for Marvel. He knows what I like to draw, but he never lets me get lazy by staying in my comfort zone! Sometimes he’ll write a challenging scene for me to force me to push myself. My whole style has developed with his writing, and when I read his scripts I can see what the comic should look like in my head.

Parker writes like an artist because, you know, he is one; he’ll give me minimalist panel descriptions and let me intuit what he’s after. I think he writes a little more loosely for me than he would for an artist who doesn’t sit three feet away from him every day—our desks in Periscope Studio, where we each do most of our work, are separated by Parker’s orange metal bookcase full of Essential trades and Prince Valiant volumes. If I ever get stuck on a panel design I can swivel my chair and ask him what he wants, and usually he’ll just grab a piece of paper and sketch it out for me.

We’re all really fortunate in that we have set up a whole culture of collaboration for ourselves here in Portland. Not only do I work closely with Paul and Parker, they’ve also worked with each other—co-writing for What If? and the Free Comic Book Day Marvel Adventures Iron Man, and now they’re writing side-by-side stories in the upcoming Age of the Sentry mini. They both work regularly with other Periscope members, too: Paul does Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four with David Hahn, Parker has an issue of X-Men: First Class drawn by Karl Kesel coming up, his run on Virgin Comic’s Gamekeeper series was drawn by Ron Randall and Ron Chan, and he’s writing a spelunking thriller for Steve Lieber. It feels like we’re keeping it all in the family, which helps us all stay motivated and happy!
