More summer reading for those of you with a penchant for crime. Silence & Co., written by Gur Benshemesh and illustrated by Ron Randall (with a cover by Steve Lieber), tells the story of a young hitman tackling the world’s most powerful criminal bank. Minhquan Nguyen calls the story ”Pulp at its finest. A terrific sample of the genre, proving that you can have sex, drugs, and violence in a story and still keep it classy.” The book should hit shelves next month, so keep your eyes peeled. Visit the book’s website for more information.

“You will realize when you observe people closely, and/or read substantial, great books, or watch movies by real masters that we are all complex animals. We are mixed bags with strengths and weaknesses, blind spots and inconsistencies. That’s part of what makes us unpredictable and endlessly interesting.”
Ron Randall recently posted a brief essay about Creating Characters You Can Live With over on the Trekker Blog. Click through to read the whole story!

For those of you attending Emerald City Comicon in March, several Periscope members have recently opened pre-orders for commissions at the show. This means you have a guaranteed spot and can pick your finished pieces up whenever you stop by the table, rather than having to hang around while we juggle commission work with talking to folks at the show. Check out the full list of artists below!

Natalie Nourigat has the entire lowdown on pre-ordering commissions on her blog.

Grace Allison also has a helpful post on her site about commission slots.

Last week Ron Randall sat down to give the Periscope Interns (Christina McKenzie & Lucy Bellwood) some hard-earned knowledge about layouts, thumbnails, and good storytelling. The takeaways? Storytelling needs to be clear and compelling. To accomplish this, try identifying the one thing you need to communicate in each panel and on each page. Look for ways to frame your panels that make use of three dimensional space, rather than staging everything on a flat plane. Be aware of layout and how it effects the reading experience. Be aware of how many close-ups, mid-shots, and full figures you use on a given page. Try to have a little of all three. Essentially, be aware of everything! There isn’t a millimeter to spare.
